Spice Market Ledger
Confident everyday math, one customer at a time
Spice Market Ledger is a mental-arithmetic exercise set in the maritime spice ports: players total orders, make change, add a harbor tax and remember running tabs. It offers low-stakes practice with the everyday math of budgets, wages and purchases.

What players see

The science
Everyday math and number memory. Quick mental math helps with checking change, comparing prices, tracking a commissary or household budget, and handling money at work after release.
Reviews link working memory to math performance, since holding numbers while calculating draws on it. Level 2 adds tabs to remember across orders.
Raghubar, Barnes & Hecht, 2010, "Working memory and mathematics: a review," Learning and Individual DifferencesIn a national survey, incarcerated adults averaged 220 in numeracy versus 255 for adults in households, showing a real need for practice.
Rampey et al., 2016, Highlights From the U.S. PIAAC Survey of Incarcerated Adults (NCES 2016-040)RAND's meta-analysis found correctional education participants had 43% lower odds of returning to prison. This game supplements, and does not replace, education programs.

Culture players carry with them
Players learn about Malacca, Galle and Canton as great Asian trading ports, and about the women who ran much of Southeast Asia's market trade. Notes also cover true cinnamon from Sri Lanka and Malaysia's port cities listed by UNESCO today.
- Port of the Monsoon WindsIn the 1400s, Malacca grew into a great port. Ships from India, China and Arabia waited there for the monsoon winds to change. One visitor wrote that 84 languages were spoken there.
- Women at the MarketVisitors to old Southeast Asian ports often wrote that women ran much of the market trade. Women sold goods, weighed them and changed money, keeping careful count of every coin.
- Galle and CinnamonGalle, on the coast of Sri Lanka, is an old walled port and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sri Lanka is the home of true cinnamon, made from thin inner bark rolled into quills.
