Asia Pacific Cultural Studios makes culturally grounded cognitive-wellness games for people in correctional facilities and reentry programs, and for the communities that welcome them home.
Why we exist
Tablets have reached nearly every prison and jail in the country. The content on them rarely reflects the people holding them, and almost none is built for the limits of the device.
Long confinement wears down attention, memory and emotional balance at exactly the moment people need them most, to take part in programming, keep family ties and plan for release. Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander people inside face added weight: the model-minority myth, family shame and the expectation to suffer silently. Services that speak to their culture are rare.
We build games that offer real practice and real respect. They are calm, honest about what they can do, rooted in heritage, and engineered to run on the most locked-down hardware there is.
What we believe
Dignity first
Every screen treats the player as a capable adult. No shaming feedback, no stereotypes, no imagery of bars or uniforms.
Culture is not decoration
We name specific traditions, research them, and let them shape the meaning of each game, not just its colors.
Honest claims only
We describe skill practice, not cures. If the evidence does not support a claim, we do not make it.
Built for the real device
Low power, no network, worn screens, cheap earbuds. Constraints are the brief, not an afterthought.
Bridge generations
Following APCC's example, the work should connect people with their heritage and with the families waiting for them.

The cultures are Asian and Pacific. The games are for every player who picks them up.
How we work
Each game starts from a well-studied exercise in cognitive science and a specific cultural tradition that fits it. Batik pattern memory, for example, or navigating by a central canoe. We write psychoeducation content drawing on cognitive-behavioral skills and culturally informed work on AAPI mental health, at a reading level everyone can use.
Then we engineer for the tablet: one offline file, procedural art, gentle sound, and automated checks for security, compatibility and size on every build.
