The Lantern Suite

Ten games. Each one pairs a well-studied cognitive exercise with a living tradition from across Asia and the Pacific. Each runs offline, in a single small file.

Cover art for Saffron & Silk

Saffron & Silk

Notice the edges without losing the center.

Keep your eyes on a singing bowl while a silk pouch flashes at the edge of view. Report the pattern in the bowl, then where the pouch appeared.

Practices
Visual processing speed
Research model
Useful field of view (UFOV) and inspection time, with an adaptive staircase
Cultural anchor
Himalayan brass singing bowls and the saffron silk trade of South Asia
Why it matters
Speed-of-processing practice has the strongest long-term evidence of any brain-training domain. Here it is framed as calm, chosen attention rather than constant scanning.
Demo
Two levels, about 2 to 4 minutes each. Works offline.
Play Saffron & Silk
Cover art for Batik Matrix

Batik Matrix

Hold the pattern, then weave it back.

Tiles of undyed cloth briefly reveal a batik motif. Remember where, then tap them back from memory as the grid grows.

Practices
Visual-spatial working memory
Research model
Spatial span recall on growing grids, with adaptive load
Cultural anchor
Wax-resist batik of Indonesia and Malaysia
Why it matters
Spatial memory can fade during long stretches of low stimulation. Textile motifs give the practice beauty and meaning.
Demo
Two levels, about 2 to 4 minutes each. Works offline.
Play Batik Matrix
Cover art for Wayfinder's Horizon

Wayfinder's Horizon

Hold your course while the fleet drifts.

Five outrigger canoes cross a night ocean. Steer by the one in the center, even when the others point the other way.

Practices
Selective attention
Research model
Eriksen flanker task with congruent and incongruent trials
Cultural anchor
Pacific voyaging and wayfinding by stars and swells
Why it matters
The flanker task practices filtering out distraction. The reflection connects that skill to staying on your own course.
Demo
Two levels, about 2 to 4 minutes each. Works offline.
Play Wayfinder's Horizon
Cover art for Dual Harmony

Dual Harmony

Two rules, one steady mind.

Cards appear in the garden or the court. In the garden, sort by symbol; in the court, sort by number. Switch smoothly as the card moves.

Practices
Cognitive flexibility
Research model
Task switching with measured switch cost
Cultural anchor
East Asian bamboo and chrysanthemum painting traditions
Why it matters
Moving between rules is a skill people who live between cultures use every day. The game frames adaptability as strength.
Demo
Two levels, about 2 to 4 minutes each. Works offline.
Play Dual Harmony
Cover art for Jade & Vermilion

Jade & Vermilion

See the color, not the word.

Words appear in colored ink. Tap the ink color and let the word pass by, including heavy words like shame and duty in Level 2.

Practices
Inhibitory control
Research model
Stroop and emotional Stroop interference
Cultural anchor
Lacquer arts of China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Myanmar
Why it matters
Practicing a pause between seeing and reacting, with emotionally loaded words, gives players a safe place to rehearse letting heavy words pass.
Demo
Two levels, about 2 to 4 minutes each. Works offline.
Play Jade & Vermilion
Cover art for Banyan Branches

Banyan Branches

Steady hands for many paths at once.

Dew drops flow down a banyan's branches. Flip the knots to guide each color to its bowl among the roots.

Practices
Divided attention
Research model
Multi-stream routing under rising load
Cultural anchor
The banyan as a tree of refuge across South and Southeast Asia
Why it matters
Several demands at once, met with small calm adjustments rather than panic: the practice and the lesson are the same.
Demo
Two levels, about 2 to 4 minutes each. Works offline.
Play Banyan Branches
Cover art for Tea Ceremony Sequence

Tea Ceremony Sequence

One step, held gently in mind.

Tea utensils appear one at a time on a wooden tray. Tap Match when an item repeats one step back, or two steps back in Level 2.

Practices
Working-memory updating
Research model
Adaptive 1-back and 2-back continuous recognition
Cultural anchor
Tea traditions of China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Vietnam
Why it matters
The n-back task is a standard working-memory exercise. The slow, ritual pace of tea practice keeps it calm and unhurried.
Demo
Two levels, about 2 to 4 minutes each. Works offline.

Look-ahead puzzles with a limited move budget
Cultural anchor
Rice terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras and Yunnan's Hani terraces
Why it matters
Thinking several moves ahead is the same habit that supports planning for life after release.
Demo
Two levels, about 2 to 4 minutes each. Works offline.

Kintsugi Reframe

Mend the crack with gold.

A broken bowl holds thoughts on each shard. Sort unkind thoughts from kind and true ones, then trace gold along the seams to see the thought reframed.

Practices
Reframing thoughts
Research model
Thought sorting grounded in cognitive-behavioral skills

How we talk about results

Research on brain training is clear on one point: people reliably get better at the exercises they practice. Whether that carries over to everyday life is less certain, and claims that games prevent illness or raise intelligence have been rejected by researchers and regulators.

So we make modest, checkable claims. The Lantern Suite offers structured practice in attention, memory, flexibility and planning. It is a pro-social activity with cultural and reflective content. It is not a medical device or a treatment, and it does not replace counseling or clinical care.

The strongest long-term evidence is for speed-of-processing training, which is why Saffron & Silk follows that research model closely.
