The Lantern Suite / Behind the design
Saffron & Silk
Calm, wide attention, practiced in short adaptive glimpses
Saffron & Silk is a processing-speed exercise modeled on the useful field of view task: players read a pattern in a central singing bowl while noticing a silk pouch at the edge. It lets players practice quick, unhurried seeing, framed as calm awareness rather than constant scanning.

What players see

The science
Visual processing speed. Taking in a scene quickly and accurately helps when following a class demonstration, crossing a busy street, or learning a new job site after release.
The useful field of view task measures how much a person takes in at one glance, center and edge together. This game adapts that center-plus-periphery design.
Ball, Beard, Roenker, Miller & Griggs, 1988, "Age and visual search: expanding the useful field of view," Journal of the Optical Society of America AIn the ACTIVE trial, speed-of-processing training improved the trained ability in older adults, and the gains were still measurable two years later.
Ball et al., 2002, "Effects of cognitive training interventions with older adults," JAMA (ACTIVE trial)A 10-year ACTIVE follow-up associated speed training with about 29% lower dementia risk in older adults. That is one study's association, not a claim for this game.

Culture players carry with them
Players meet Himalayan metal bowls, still hammered by hand in Nepal and northern India, and the saffron and silk of South Asia, from Kashmir's autumn crocus fields to Assam's golden muga silk. Notes between levels explain how each is made and used today.
- A Bowl That HumsRub a wooden stick slowly around the rim of a Himalayan metal bowl, and the metal begins to shake. That shaking makes a low hum that can ring for a long time.
- Hammered by HandMany of these bowls are made today in Nepal, in places like Patan in the Kathmandu Valley, and in northern India. Metalworkers heat the metal and hammer each bowl into shape by hand.
- Red Threads, Purple FlowersSaffron is the red threads inside a purple crocus flower. Each flower has only three. Pickers gather them by hand, so one kilogram of saffron takes more than 100,000 flowers.
Culture notes as they appear in the game, between levels and on the title screen.
Impact
For the people who play
Short, winnable trials with clear feedback give a felt sense of progress within one session.
A calming metaphor for steady attention: notice the edges without losing your center.
South Asian and Himalayan players see their heritage reflected; everyone gains a window into it.
