Monsoon Canal

Look ahead, plan each move, then let the water flow

Monsoon Canal is a look-ahead planning puzzle: players rotate canal tiles to carry spring water to every terrace field within a move budget, then open the gate. It rewards picturing several steps ahead before acting, a habit that also matters when planning for life after release.

The science

Planning and problem solving. Thinking several steps ahead helps with budgeting, scheduling appointments, preparing a release plan, and doing a job task in the right order.

Culture players carry with them

Players learn how Ifugao families in the Philippine Cordilleras and Hani communities in Yunnan built, and still care for, terraced rice landscapes recognized by UNESCO. Notes explain the forests, channels and water-sharing that keep every field watered.

  • Stairs of RiceIn the mountains of the northern Philippines, Ifugao families built rice terraces like giant green stairs. In 1995, UNESCO named the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras a World Heritage Site.
  • Forests Feed the FieldsAbove their terraces, Ifugao families keep small private forests called muyong. The trees hold rain like a sponge and feed the springs that water the rice fields below.
  • Cared for TodayFrom 2001 to 2012, UNESCO listed the Philippine terraces as in danger. Ifugao communities, local groups and the government worked together to protect them, and the terraces came off that list.

Culture notes as they appear in the game, between levels and on the title screen.
