Kintsugi Reframe
Spot an unkind thought, then mend it with gold
Kintsugi Reframe is a thought-sorting activity grounded in cognitive-behavioral skills: players sort unkind distortions from kind, true thoughts, then trace gold along the seams to reveal a reframe. It teaches the language of thinking traps, including shame carried for family, as education rather than therapy.

What players see

The science
Reframing thoughts. Catching and rechecking harsh thoughts helps after a setback, during conflict or family contact, and when facing the stresses of reentry.
Beck described recurring distortions in depressed thinking, the basis of cognitive therapy's practice of noticing and re-examining unhelpful thoughts.
Beck, 1963, "Thinking and depression: I. Idiosyncratic content and cognitive distortions," Archives of General PsychiatryA review of meta-analyses found strong support for CBT, especially for anxiety and stress. This game borrows CBT's thought labels but is not therapy.
Hofmann, Asnaani, Vonk, Sawyer & Fang, 2012, "The efficacy of cognitive behavioral therapy: a review of meta-analyses," Cognitive Therapy and ResearchA pilot trial found AWARE, a culturally tailored, trauma-informed group program for young Asian American women, feasible and safe. The game draws on its cultural themes only.

Culture players carry with them
Players learn how Japanese kintsugi joins broken pottery with urushi lacquer and powdered gold, why repairs take weeks, and how the craft relates to wabi-sabi. The mended bowl becomes a respectful metaphor for repair as part of a person's story.
- Golden JoineryKintsugi is a Japanese word that means "golden joinery." Artisans join broken pottery back together with urushi lacquer, then dust the seams with powdered gold. The cracks become shining lines.
- Lacquer From a TreeUrushi lacquer is sap from the lacquer tree. It is sticky like glue when wet and very hard when dry. It hardens best in a warm, damp cabinet called a muro.
- Slow, Careful WorkA kintsugi repair is built in thin layers, and each layer needs time to harden. A full repair can take weeks or even months. Artisans in Japan still teach this patient craft today.
