Banyan Branches
Several demands at once, met with small, calm adjustments
Banyan Branches is a divided-attention exercise: dew drops flow down a banyan's branches, and players flip knots to route each color to its matching bowl. It practices handling several moving demands at once with calm, well-timed choices rather than rushed ones.

What players see

The science
Divided attention. Tracking several things at once helps when juggling a work task and instructions, managing appointments and deadlines, or caring for children while doing chores.
Multiple-object tracking studies show people can follow several moving targets at once, within limits. Banyan Branches asks players to track several moving drops.
Pylyshyn & Storm, 1988, "Tracking multiple independent targets," Spatial VisionMultiple resource theory explains how workload rises as tasks compete for the same attention. Level 2 adds knots, colors and simultaneous drops in steps.

Culture players carry with them
Players learn how the banyan grows roots down from its branches into new trunks, why it is India's national tree and part of Indonesia's emblem, and how its shade has long served as a village meeting place. They also learn its name comes from Gujarati merchants.
- Roots From BranchesA banyan tree grows roots down from its branches. When these roots reach the ground, they thicken into new trunks. Over many years, one banyan can spread as wide as a small forest.
- The Great BanyanIn a botanic garden near Kolkata, India, the Great Banyan is thought to be over 250 years old. Its first trunk was removed in 1925 after it decayed. The tree lives on, held up by thousands of roots.
- A Symbol of UnityThe banyan is the national tree of India. In Indonesia, where it is called beringin, a banyan appears on the national emblem. There it stands for the unity of the nation.
